Three main causes: trapped air at the top (cold top, warm bottom — bleed it), sludge at the bottom (cold bottom, warm top — needs flushing), or a stuck thermostatic radiator valve (entirely cold — replace TRV head). We test which it is in minutes.
Magnetite sludge — black iron-oxide silt — settles in radiator bottoms and pipework, restricts flow, overworks the pump and clogs the boiler heat exchanger. Untreated systems lose 25%+ efficiency and kill modern condensing boilers in 5–7 years instead of 15.
Chemical clean (cheaper, slower) suits systems with mild sludge and no major cold spots. Powerflush (more expensive, faster, more thorough) is needed when multiple radiators are blocked or you're fitting a new boiler onto an old system to protect the warranty.
